AROUND THE WORLD with Archie Daniels
Beneluxe: Determined not to be pushed around by New York, Beneluxe's captain tried to set the tone with a hard challenge to Ricardo Reis in the opening minutes. Justice's elbow earned him a red card, and broke Reis' jaw. In a move seen by many Beneluxe players as retaliation, Olaf Aalto threw an elbow to keeper Kiyoshi Watanabe, which knocked Watanabe out of the game and will keep him out of the Tri-Royals next match. A war of words has ensued between the two coaches, and deep bad blood has been brewed between the two teams.

Cairo: After a hard fought opener against Rio, Cairo was made to look foolish by the midfield dominance of Greater China and the skills of Eduardo Tanseco. They will have to rebound and shake off their bad morale if they want to get a result against Tokyo.

Greater China: Greater China, however, is riding some high morale as their offense, which was so poor against Prague, came together to score three goals.

Kingston: Rumors have been circulating around Kingston coach Sam August. After turning around the Glory Boys, it seems that both Beneluxe and Cairo have made offers to August.

Kuala Lumpur: KL coach Ruiz, however, is staying put, as he has signed a new contract with the club. KL will try to keep their winning ways against Rio.

London: Also staying put is Tom Whig, who has the Underground playing solid football and has lead them to a 2-0-0 start.

Marseilles: After a 3-0 loss to SHU, coach LeBouef gave the team a day off from practice to rest and forget about that match. It seems to have paid off as the team seems more relaxed. In fact, Rene Foutz, who played a hard 90 minutes, has been pencilled into the starting lineup rather than benched due to fatigue.

Mexico City: While London is off to a 2-0-0 start, Mexico City is playing to expectations, and has started 0-0-2. Their morale is low, and they need a result in their upcoming match.

Moscow: After an opening day loss, Moscow looked like champions again, knocking off Prague with a late goal. All eyes will be on their match with Mexico City to see if they can recapture their dominant play.

New York: The Radio rebounded from their loss against Kingston with a 2-0 win against Beneluxe. A tougher test will come against the Triomphe, a match that has been heavily hyped on both sides of the Atlantic. New York will bring a strong morale to the match.

Prague: Coach Tomas Hupla has filed a formal complaint against the referee crew for Prague's match against Moscow, contending that Moscow striker Rolf Erickson was offsides when he scored the goal that put the Bears up, 3-2.

Rio: With Tonio Paz fatigued from Rio's match against Mexico City, it seems Ichi Yamamoto will get the start, his first. Yamamoto is ready to show off his skills against the fierce Kuala Lumpur competition.

SHU: The Unlimited come into their game against rival Kingston with high morale after their dominant performance against Marseilles.

Sydney: It seems Navvie fans have taken rookie midfielder Sergei Pokrovsky to heart, and made him a fan favorite.

Tokyo: In the wake of their 5-0 loss to Kuala Lumpur, the press has been unmerciful to the Pop players.

Vancouver: With Diego Infante unlikely to play in their match against Beneluxe, Milos Hrdina has been training hard all week, and will be in peak form come game time.

INTENSIVE CARE with Dr. Ravjid Singh

AROUND THE WORLD with Archie Daniels
Beneluxe: After only one game in the league, the Tri-Royals have lodged a formal complaint against refree Piet Halston for a controversial call in their match versus Marseilles. Down 1-0, Beneluxe's wall sucessfully blocked Welthey Morsberger's free kick, but Halston ruled that the Tri-Royal wall was too close to the kicker, and call a foul. This resulted in Morsberger faking a second attempt, and Francois Laciel bending his kick around the right side of the wall, and into the back of the net to put the Triomphe up 2-0. Marseilles would go on to win, 2-1.

Cairo: Dynasty captain Apollo Chen had choice words for Corazo Feiho and his club during a post-game press conference. In a game that included five injuries and two red cards-- including Maarti Jaarvinen's straight red only three minutes in-- Chen accussed Rio of being out to hurt other players, and told the Carnavale to "buy a lot of cold spray" if the two clubs play again.

Greater China: After a slow start to the season, transfer rumors are already swirling around the All-Stars. Mainstays Michelangelo Ponti and Leonid Mardinak are rumored to have been offered to other teams in exchange for a defensive replacement.

Kingston: After smothering the New York offense in a 1-0 shutout, Kingston's defense is feeling confident even though they will miss top defender Bruno Savoia due to injury. Rene Saint-Marc has looked sharp in practice and looks to be in top form for their match versus Vancouver.

Kuala Lumpur: The Frequency took a step towards dispelling the disappointment of the previous season with an emotional victory over the Internationale. Spirits are running high, as reported by Arawat Ngamsan in his cover story on KL in the new issue of Pacific Beat magazine. Mr. Ngamsan's article profiles promoted keeper Theo Mossasu and discusses Coach Ruiz's success at rallying his team's morale.

London: While London held on to bury the Skeletons 2-1, David Uccello was less than pleased with his performance. The star striker was unable to break free of his markers, and seemed a bit sluggish on his runs. Mr. Uccello will try to break out of his slumping start during London's upcoming clash with Sydney.

Marseilles: Always a model of solid, technical footballing, Marseilles showed upstart Beneluxe how the game is played. In fact, the Marseilles starters hadn't played together for quite some time due to last season's plague of injury. Look for Marseilles' players to enjoy each other's company on the pitch as they look to have another good game versus the Souther Hemisphere Unlimited.

Mexico City: While Mexico City's rowdy fans have always been behind homegrown product Sancho Tothoc, it seemed like there was a chill in the air towards the forward in the Skeletons opener against London. The fans did seem to appreciate the play of Idrissa Kola, however. With Coach Dowell stressing defense this year, maybe the supporter's got the memo.

Moscow: The opening day loss by the champions has some players pointing fingers at their mates. Faly Anjarasoa got the promotion from sub to starter over Victor Manzani, and Manzani said in an interview that he felt it was Anjarasoa's inability to control the middle of the pitch that led to the Moscow loss. Coach Berg will have a tough decision about what to do with this disgruntled player.

Nairobi: After a grueling 2-2 tie against Sydney, defender Venus Jones was seen barely being able to make it off the pitch. How much gas does this 30 year old still have? Rumors have been swirling that a retirement announcement might be in the works. She did just buy a house in Soweto, so maybe its on her mind too?

New York: Another year, another 1-0 loss on opening day for the Radio. The team looked a bit down and out during their warm ups the day after their Kingston loss, and need to shrug off their bad morale before they face Beneluxe.

Prague: Did he celebrate too much? After a great team performance by Prague, players were bound to be exhausted, but it seems that Julio Allegro was worn out after the post game festivities. He is listed as only a probable starter for their match versus Moscow.

Tokyo: While he has yet to step on an Interfoot pitch, a lot of people around the Pop are talking about midfielder Thaband Sesojane. Coach Sevenhowes seems very impressed with his fitness, and many Pop practices are punctuated by displays of Thaband's hot diribbling skills. Word is Sesojane will make his debut for Tokyo's tussle with Kuala Lumpur.

Vancouver: Perennial bridesmaids, the Whales are looking to win it all this season. However Kingston, coming off a strong season and a great beginning to this year, are poised for a run at the playoffs themselves. With Vancouver coming off an epic 2-2 tie with SHU, this game is shaping up to be a classic.
